Hidden in the forests of Rila Mountains, Rila Monastery (1147m) is a popular destination and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Ivan Rilski found the monastery in the 10th Century and the cave where he supposedly lived in is located nearby. This spectacular and peaceful place played a vital role in preserving the Bulgarian language and culture during five centuries of occupation. The monastery is also well known for being one of the hideouts of Bulgarian revolutionaries in the ages of Ottoman rule.
You can buy different souvenirs from the shops inside the Monastery and do not miss the delicious Bulgarian yoghurt!
