The Wonderful Bridges

Adventif Signpost Region Rhodope Mountains

The Wonderful Bridges (also known as 'The Marvellous Bridges') is a rock phenomenon situated in the Rhodope mountains, 1450m above sea level. These natural bridges were formed by the erosive activity of the once larger Erkyupryia River.

According to the legend, there were a lot of shepherds in the area and a dragon appeared from the mountains and attacked their herds. For many years the shepherds suffered from the dragon’s attacks until they found a way to defeat it. They loaded a donkey with tinder, set it on fire and sent it against the dragon. The dragon swallowed the donkey together with the tinder which was burning slowly - burning from the inside, the dragon wanted to hide and eventually found a hole in the ground. The dragons bones formed the Wonderful Bridges.
